About the Project
The need for improvement along the Lower Winchester Street corridor from Route 101 in Keene to West Swanzey Road in Swanzey has been known since the early 1990’s. In fact, as part of the Keene-Swanzey project proposed by NHDOT in the mid-90’s, this section of Winchester Street was scheduled for improvement. The proposed project will reconstruct one of the two major gateways that connect the City to its southern neighbors. In accordance with the City of Keene’s Complete Streets Policy, the project will address the needs of all users of the corridor including bicyclists, pedestrians, and nearby trail users. Congestion and safety issues will be addressed and access to the many businesses along the route will be improved. The project includes replacement of the Winchester Street Bridge over Ash Swamp Brook.
This project will be primarily funded by the Federal Highway Administration under the FAST- ACT. The City of Keene is the Local Public Agency (LPA) charged with planning and managing the project.
This project is currently within the "Engineering Study" phase, which is the first of many steps to bring the project to completion. More information about the process can be found within the NH DOT LPA Manual
